President Donald Trump is monitoring as an active-shooter situation that is unfolding at a high school in Florida, the White House said Wednesday.

“The president has been made aware of the school shooting in Florida,” deputy press Secretary Lindsay Walters said in a statement. “We are monitoring the situation. Our thoughts and prayers are with those affected.”

The Broward County Sheriff’s Department alerted residents on social media at 2:56 p.m. to “avoid the area” around Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida, citing a “a developing incident regarding a report of active shooter.”

The police at 3:11 p.m. said that the shooter was “still at large.”

Florida Gov. Rick Scott said he had been in contact with local authorities about the episode and would continue to follow the events on the ground.

“I’ve spoken with @BrowardSheriff Scott Israel, @browardschools Superintendent Robert Runcie and FDLE Commissioner Rick Swearingen regarding Stoneman Douglas High School,” Scott wrote on Twitter. “We’ll continue to receive updates from law enforcement.”

It was unclear whether any injuries had been reported.
